It’s already few days since the most anticipated Android smartphone ever, the Galaxy S3 is released so we wanted to compare it with its famous predecessor, the Galaxy S2.
I have played with the Galaxy S3 for almost a week since I got it a bit earlier than the rest of the world and I must say that this sure is the best smartphone I have ever used. While it is very similar to the HTC One X, I like the S3 more. It is my subjective opinion but it does feel better and fresher, maybe this is the reasons why Samsung uses slogan “inspired by nature and designed for humans” in its advertisements.
There is no doubt that the Galaxy S2 last year revolutionized Android and smartphone market in general. It had the best display, processor, and camera at that time and it bring smartphones in the whole new level. The Galaxy S2 also gave 2nd life for Android platform in general by introducing radically improved TouchWiz interface. Comparing the Galaxy S3 with Galaxy S2 is not fair as the S3 is completely new smartphone with improved specs but I still want to point out the main things Samsung has done over this past year to impress gadget and performance geeks.
Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Galaxy S2: Software and features
Both the Galaxy S2 and the galaxy S3 is based on Android platform and both runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with TouchWiz UI v4.0. The Galaxy S2 came with Android OS, v2.3.4 (Gingerbread) preinstalled but you can upgrade it to latest and greatest Android flavor.
While the both phones run the exact same version of Android and TouchWiz there are still some differences in interface but not anything radical changed though. I have already got used to TouchWiz UI and it feels a bit boring to me but if you are first time Android user you will most likely find it very attractive.
New additions to the Galaxy S3 are:
- S Voice – Voice assistant similar to Siri which you can find on iPhone 4S. The S Voice can do everything that Siri can plus it allows you to fully control your smartphone with voice commands.
- S Beam – Allows transferring files with help of NFC and Wifi Direct. It means that you can transfer files between two NFC powered devices just by putting them together and conforming file transfer with a single tap.
- Smart Stay – turns off the phone when you’re not looking at it and keeps it on while you are looking. This is great for reading, watching videos and other daily tasks.
- Direct Call – lets you call a contact simply by bringing the phone to your ear. It saves you all of one or two screen taps.
Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Galaxy S2: Processor and performance
The Galaxy S3 features a quad-core Exynos 4212 processor clocked at 1.4GHz per core. This chip is based on the ARM Cortex A9 processor architecture, but tweaked and manufactured by Samsung internally. Preliminary benchmarks shows that the Exynos 4212 is the fastest smartphone processor in the world, leaving its main competitors, the dual-core Snapdragon S4 and the quad-core Tegra 3 far behind. In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S2 uses a dual-core 1.2 Ghz in house built Exynos processor.
